What Is HDI PCB?
HDI (High-Density Interconnect) PCBs feature fine lines, small vias, and high connection pad densities that allow more complex circuitry in smaller areas. This advanced technology uses microvias—laser-drilled holes typically sized at 0.006" (150µm), 0.005″ (125µm), or 0.004" (100µm)—to connect layers with unmatched precision.
Each microvia is optically aligned and requires pad diameters as small as 0.012" (300µm), 0.010" (250µm), or 0.008" (200µm). These can be via-in-pad, offset, staggered, or stacked, and can be non-conductive filled and copper plated or solid copper filled depending on the application.
This design approach enables superior routing density—especially when working with fine-pitch BGAs (Ball Grid Arrays) such as 0.8 mm, 0.5 mm, or even 0.25 mm devices. Using stacked microvias and inverted pyramid routing, JS PCB achieves exceptional connectivity and signal reliability even in high-density, compact layouts.
Advantages of HDI PCB Technology
Implementing HDI PCB design brings significant benefits:
- Enhanced electrical performance and signal accuracy
- Improved reliability and mechanical strength
- Superior thermal management
- Reduced RFI/EMI/ESD interference
- Optimized space utilization and design efficiency
Although HDI PCBs can be more cost-effective compared to traditional multilayer PCBs, costs may increase beyond eight layers due to added complexity. However, the performance advantages—especially for high-speed, compact devices—make HDI technology the preferred choice for advanced electronics.
